The title role was perfect for Steve Howe, a brilliant young actor, who had done several outstanding one man shows on the Old Profanity Showboat and then joined the crew to slave over pints and ballast. Steve was another with an outrageous do for the show. His hair was dyed bright orange and shaved down the middle of his head to produce two cat's ears when it was sufficiently stiffened with gel and hairspray. When not performing Steve wore a woolen cap. Steve also learned the ukulele just for the show, in record time. His performance was athletic and energetic and he received favorable reviews all around. He and Richard Smith, who played Buster, were the only members of the original cast to reprise their roles in the unfortunately adapted London show.
